3-1-2 is the fastest way to get the packs running during start, assuming you're using APU air for start. As soon as 3 is going, the 1-3 isol valve closes and the #3 enging BRV supplies bleed air to the #3pack. when #1 is started next, the 1-2 isol valve closes allowing pack #1 to run....

In my case, it's done for the comfort of the tropical fish in back (actually it's all for MY comfort)!

Actually it was all designed by the same engineer that did the ac essential priority on the old 727...(also 3-1-2)

"max thrust, check essential!"

#3 pressurizes #3HYD, only system supplying pressure to the landing gear. AUX goes off with fuel on, if you start #2 during push, you have nothing powering 1 or 3. That's my guess.

My FO auto downloads them, after getting the auto flightplan download.
We're still loading KIX-MEM by hand over here....

It's been almost a year since my Mad Dog days , but it seems to me that you are correct in your assumption of why the number 3 motor is started first. From my limited systems knowledge, it seems to me that the two brake systems on the MD-11 are supplied by hydraulics from the number 1 and 3 engines. It'd be nice to have brakes, once you get a motor started. I don't believe it has anything to do with electrics or air conditioning. But then again, I'm old, with a very short memory, and it's late, and bingo at the old folks home tonight just plain wore me out.

The #3 pack on early trick was also a procedural option on the DC-10, and was more for pax planes (keeps the back cool)- we just skipped it.

The brakes are powered by the aux hyd pump during pushback... I believe that getting the air cond packs on early is the procedural reason for the 3-1-2 start.

Well, sort of ... Seems to me from my DC-10 s/o days many years ago ... that (on the DC-10 at least) it had something to do with testing generator bus priorities during start. Any smart school house guys want to pipe in here?

Regards,

Mark

I just want the FMS to move FASTER!

I've flown FMS on.. CRJ, Citation V, and X and all of them were significantly snappier.. this thing moves almost in reverse!
