I was only looking at IAH since C5 doesn’t operate out of LAX.

It could happen in LAX too. The last vacancy bid had 165 FO vacancies.

But, as has been mentioned on this forum for the last several years, I am sure C5 will close down any day now as a failed experiment.
The only reason C5 is still around is because of Covid. United saw an opportunity to save a few bucks, betting that the recovery period would be longer and that time would give C5 time to grow. Seemed like a reasonable bet at the time. Unfortunately for them, the recovery came a lot quicker than planned. C5 couldn’t staff the airline right before Covid and they can’t staff it now. Same reasons both times: pay too far below industry standard and abysmal work rules! Attrition is through the roof and recruiting has slowed to a trickle!

Could the inability to recruit be due to people being more afraid to go to a 50 seat only airline after what United management has said about their plans for that fleet more than the current working conditions? Not justifying the pay or contract, but I wouldn’t think that any 50 seat only airline would have people lined up to work there betting that United throws them a bone and shuffles some of the surviving aircraft their way. I know that if I was starting out I’d be apprehensive about going to any UAX 50 seat airline.

That may be part of it, but I don’t think Air Whisky is having the same problem, at least not to the same degree, and they only fly 50 seat CRJs. C5 management is selling the story that they will be the remaining 50 seat, single class regional carrier for United. Remember, the United info says that they plan to keep about 100 of whichever plane they choose, around for a few more years! The only thing worse than a 145 from a customer perspective is a CRJ200S! That’s leaves plenty of time to come in, get some quick hours and a quick upgrade. That’s IF the place stays afloat.

Agreed - but just to add on I don’t think UA can collectively cover the flying at C5 with any other regional since no other UAX carrier has the 145 and the CRJ200 can’t do the same thing this plane can. So basically they’re stuck until the bulk of the the NB deliveries at mainline arrive

This is true, Mesa getting all that Mexico flying C5 can’t handle

just out of curiosity, what can a 145 do that can’t be fine with a 200?

Climb out performance, maintains a substantially higher rate.

ok, and that matters because the 145 goes to what places that the 200 cannot go to? Which places do C5, Envoy and Piedmont take the 145 where, SkyWest, AidWisconsin and Endeavor cannot take the 200?

I haven’t flown the 200 but I’m fairly certain it isn’t nearly as comfortable in the back when it’s hot. Likely would be a considering factor for UA considering their drive to attract ‘premium’ customers

And also, could those airlines cover the current C5 schedule line with their current fleet entirely? Doubt it
