In my class of 5, only one did not have a choice for their base. With the amount of new hires coming through, it looks like a low seniority pilot should be able to get to the base they want within a month or two at most, if they don't start at their first choice right off. Each new hire group will be different depending on where the pilots come from. In our group two picked IAD and 2 picked EWR. The 5th, was placed in EWR. For some, EWR is an easier commute. I fly in from Orlando and am based at IAD. So far I have not had any trouble making it to or from IAD on the day I wanted. However, there are twice as many options going from MCO to EWR and the flight is only 20 minutes longer.
