I think that too might also vary from state to state. I live in St. Louis, MO and the feeling that I'm getting is that you have to provide information showing them on the probability on getting a job. Meaning, come in with a few to a dozen job postings pertaining to the type that you want to get. Pretty much you are a sales person, trying to hook, line and sinker the WIA personnel on giving you the funding, if it's even available.

I wouldn't spend the money to do any type right now. I have 4 types and have been traditionally very busy in the past.
There is little movement anywhere in contracting.
Unless you have a corporate network built up and have been "promised" some work, I'd put the money in the bank, and find a part-time job until it turns around.
Just my two-cents.

Have any of you actually received the WIA grant? I tried to get it in Florida and when I went to the workshop that you are required to go to in order to start the process, they pretty much laughed in my face and said that they do not provide money for those sort of things. They did provide money for nursing, truck driving, construction schools, etc. I feel like this is just another rumor. Unless of course another state does actually fund for a type rating. Now if you get accepted for the WIA grant it is like unemployment. You have to show for certain period of time that you are actively seeking work with your new degree.

I had looked into a grant in Massachusetts for a Beechjet type, they said the same thing as in the post above. They start with the lowest common denominator and then go up from there, the grants seemed to go to people who needed GED's or to learn English and people with families/dependents qualified way before I would have. When I told them the amount for the type they were pretty astonished as well and said that amount would be very difficult to secure.

The State of Hawaii has a program for former Aloha pilots to get type ratings. They'll pay up to $19k towards the rating itself, then they'll reimburse you up to $1500 towards hotel during training and up to $1200 for airfare.
The caveats are:
1) You must be furloughed from Aloha - doesn't matter if you didn't live in Hawaii or you're collecting unemployment in another state.
2) You must have a bona fide job offer requiring the particular rating. You will be required to give them the original hire letter and also your first paystub showing your employment following your training.
3) You cannot have used other funding towards a type rating, i.e. some guys got full 737 types through the City of Honolulu, and are ineligible for this program.
