But after a hundred years of seeking one, we still don’t have an influenza immunization that is much more than 50% effective, and that in a good year. In a bad year it might be only 10% effective. And that’s in 2020 too. We MAY get an effective vaccine for coronavirus but it’s certainly not impossible that we won’t get one.
And even if we do it’s likely not to be any time very soon.

I was going to take my nieces to Yosemite, Sequoia, and San Francisco next week. I had booked NPS lodging a year in advance and bought our plane tickets in February.
My sister told me I had to cancel yesterday. She was scared by the headlines regarding virus cases in CA, daily deaths being back over 1,000, and all the rioting going on in big cities. She never once expressed any concern about the safety of our trans-con flight.

I’m not saying the virus and the unrest aren’t serious in their own right. I’m saying the popular media across the spectrum is acting with the same level of integrity found in used car sales, and it’s difficult to deal with real problems and manufactured problems at the same time.
Sorry your trip got cancelled.

Maybe we will get hit by another Chicxulub sized asteroid like the one that did in the dinosaurs and suffer another worldwide extinction event too. Anything is possible.

This is the stuff that really kicks me in the shorts. There are a lot of valid reasons to change plans right now, but I suspect the nonstop fear mongering from the popular media is hurting us all just as much as those valid reasons are.

Many of us are about to have to compete with 50 million, give or take, people for a job that will cover our living expenses without needing to raid our savings. Some of us will be left without a carrier to which we can expect to be recalled.
We've wasted hundreds of pages arguing why and that is open for some debate. Those who don't see it as an exestential threat to pilot career expectations are frankly delusional. A few will ride this out relatively unscathed but most are going to be negatively impacted and some quite servely.

Nobody is suggesting life won't go on. The issue is the time it takes to get even close to 'back to normal'. Aviation isn't the only industry that needs to cut itself in half for the indefinite future.

also, due to early outs, Alaska, and southwest aren’t furloughing. Delta probably won’t either. Now I know, that is only 3 airlines, but every seniority list was supposed to be gutted on oct. 1. There is some positivity out there, that this may not be as devastating to pilot careers as once thought.

the reason for my optimism is how quickly the numbers rebounded in June, and the first week of July until the corona numbers started climbing again. That’s proof to me, that passengers will come back, and quickly.
