Secondly, if you really think ours sucks that bad, I encourage you to go over and read the American and United boards. AAL pilots are not at all happy with the APA, and UAL interestingly enough has a number of pilots blaming the 81% for selling out. The second standard deviation is alive and well at both airlines as well. But reading between the lines, our contract is awesome in comparison. You want ALL short calls ALL the time? That's what the awesome SWA has. AAL is not much better. those guys are seemingly ALWAYS in my crashpad when I barely use it. Want to trade profit sharing with them? Concessions? Yeah maybe there were some, but they were benign in comparison.

opinion

The point is not comparative subjective analysis. The point is our contract is lacking in many areas and our focus should be on those areas and their improvement.

The DPA was a disaster primarily because of a few people that couldn't keep their emotions in check and ran a fair number of people off that might have been interested. (Think cut and paste spammers) But they do have one salient point and that is that our dues are too high. I agree with that. Cannoll, Bartells and my LEC reps are about to get a series of emails that will argue this point, and I will join forces with Fielding on this and encourage ALL Delta pilots to write, over and over to their reps until we see some satisfaction in this arena.
DPA was a reaction to the lack of satisfaction with our beloved ALPA. It exists and has/had many members for a reason. Harnessing that sentiment could serve ALPA well but instead it is ridiculed.

As for the dues debate, similar to the VEBA discussion the members want to be heard. we also want a way to reduce expenses. (taxes, dues etc.) There is no way ALPA will initiate a dues reduction, it will have to be grass roots. ALPA WILL initiate a scheme that further ties the members to ALPA by taking a portion of their income under the guise of providing a benefit. The real benefit is to ALPA by building a complex relationship (that is difficult or impossible to untangle) via their administration of said benefit.

I don't care who our CBA is. I just want reasonable dues and fair representation. In ALPA both are lacking. The attempt to change the organization is being slowed and opposed by those who claim the value of ALPA is irreplaceable and the leadership is infallible. We have made some gains but are far from the reform the membership desires.
