They are way easier than regular short legs. Same gates, same routes, same frequencies, same approaches, no panic early closeouts or pilot pushing to push back early, no bag issues, few pax issues and like you said, usually good layovers.
Weather isn't that big of a deal either; if its nice its actually relaxing and quite enjoyable. If the weather is super bad, they often just cancel. One bud used to bid afternoons in the summer hoping to get turns chopped off. I wouldn't go that far but he claimed it worked well.
I'd take shuttle ops all day any day over BHM/SAV/CHS or LAX-LAS turns etc.

I am going to assume you never flew the shuttle. Guys loved these trips. We had pretty good see America trips at the time and the shuttle trips went senior. The see America trips were often called shuttle appreciation trips!

I'd give shuttle op rotations a -1.5 leg per day handicap.

Unless the shutdown ends soon, it's likely the A220 entry into service will be delayed.

I do not do an average of 18 Delta flights a year, that I want to do. Instead I am forced to travel on UAL or AA.
Most of these missed DAL flights are in/out of GRB, and because there are no seats available...not enough capacity.
The DAL people in GRB have told me that they have the highest % of high status frequent flyers of any base in the DAL network, and are constantly asking DAL for more flights and bigger aircraft.
