Previous employer FSA worked this way until the rules changed with the ACA. Prior to ACA, most drugstores, pharmacies and even many of the grocery stores cash register systems had FSA coding that would allow you to just swipe the FSA card and it payed for only the qualified items (CVS had an 'F' in the margin of their receipts). After the rules changed as to what qualified for FSA, the coding got so screwed up that it no longer auto-separated and you had to specify what got paid by the card or make a separate transaction to make it work.

This would be comical if it wasn't so pathetic.
After all the above, I send in a letter of appeal to dispute the denial........Today I get the letter returned because the Post Office cannot deliver to the PO Box number for the Appeals.........The PO Box number that's listed on the denial letter!!! Holy Crap! What do I have to do!!!

Well, I just got off the phone with a UHC claims rep. She looked up the claim and was just as stunned as I was with the "illegible" reason for why the claim was denied. She looked at it an cannot figure out why it was denied. All the information is clearly there and, get this, LEGIBLE! She couldn't do anything right then but is resubmitting it and going to make sure an actual person looks at it... She is also putting a note on it that I want a call when it gets looked at/processed again.
Plus I got the REAL address to send an appeals to now. I should charge them for the price of 2 stamps...

I'm looking forward to the resolution/next step UHC takes. Will you let us know if it gets resolved? I'm liking our insurance/HSA/L.P. FSA situation less and less with every story like this.
