Cannot believe DAL would even look at Alitalia. Back in 1999 when I was still flying in the EU KLM was looking at a merger, and I knew some dutch guys that ended up training there in anticipation of the ISL. I don't think I ever heard a single positive thing about Alitalia. I don't think the have ever showed a profit, have been dependent on gov welfare for decades, will strike every Tuesday, horrible customer service, you name it.

Here's one...their FAs are nice!

But seriously, while I don't presume to fully understand the business world, there are lots of very successful companies that were once at the bottom of their industry.

wikipedia: It has reported only one year of profit (1998) since its foundation in 1946. Alitalia reported net losses of more than €3.7 billion between 1999 and 2008. Previous state aid to Alitalia included some €1.5 billion in 1998 from the government of premier Romano Prodi.

I see a lot of dedication to stay at the bottom though.

Bought ZEDs for the whole family two summers ago because it was the only green smiley from Rome to Athens. A-321 with 1/3 load. We had no problems, on time easy gates and no stress. The flight was flawless but I'd say 1/2 were American and European non revs. I'm to lazy to look up their debt but the story was that Etihad stuck a bunch of money into their infrastructure. It'll be cleaned up in bankruptcy I'm guessing.

Maybe the Italian government will sever the Fifth Freedom rights of the ME3 carriers in Italy in exchange for a majority purchase by Delta?.....

Or it’s a bunch of desperate Italian officials looking for a lucky shot at getting a very successful airline to save their bacon? And said airline has no interest in such event but they’ll be glad to entertain the Italians for a day or so in ATL....

Why not, we already own some French, Dutch, British, Mexican, Brazilian and Chinese? Italian would fit nicely with a side of Korean and Canadian.

High level visits are going on all the time, vast majority without press coverage. As an example, due to frequency AF/KLM and Aeromexico even have permanent offices on Delta campus.
Probably JV talks, but not a merger as we, pilots, think of them.

It’s funny that we laugh about trains but I could see delta being a global enterprise one day that has high speed trains, cruise ships and planes

Didn't work so well for PanAm. Robbed Peter to pay Paul...ended up a loss. Though I totally think I'm gonna retire from SkyTeam airlines in a few decades ..
