Default Contract openers

So it seems like the union is going to publicize their opening position after sharing it with the company on the 5th. (There was a picture of a booklet that they posted on Facebook saying it was ready to be distributed). I've been through a few negotiations at different carriers and I can't ever recall the union putting out such specific details of their bargaining position. Is this normal or how it was done in the past? It seems like all the company needs to do is come peruse forums such as these after it's released to watch us bicker amongst ourselves over what is and isn't important to hone their negotiating strategy even more than it probably already is.

What are other people's thoughts on this?

In my experience, the booklet/publication will be very vague, with bullet points like
*increase pilot pay, duty and trip rigs, night, and international override.
*increase company retirement contributions into DC and/or other retirement vehicles.

... because a few dozen regular APC posters accurately represent the will of 14,500 pilots? I'm not worried a bit,
and I prefer to hear the union's weights of effort so I can provide (via my reps) relevant input to negotiators.

If the company spent (wasted) time here and in other forums, would they put more weight in Sailing's position or Jerry's? Is it surprising that 14,500 pilots ages 23 to 64 don't concur on what's best for their families and finances?

I’d rather the union err on the side of transparency than not. Unlike previous administrations that said it would undermine pilot/union leverage to let us know what our openers were even after a new contract had been ratified ....

I am interested to see how specific things get. The picture was of a spiral bound book, looked to be at least 10 pages. Unless it has a lot of contract comparisons that's a lot of space to fill for a very generic summary.

Didn't we get a copy of the opener in the last (2015) iteration? Seem to recall it being quite generic...as expected.

I agree with you, but openers and closers can/will look very different. Unfortunately some people will latch onto whatever they first see and every subsequent revision will be a loser in their eyes even if it's generally not in the grand scheme of things.

Kind of like guys who had a schedule change prior to posting in DBMS. Not one single pilot ever had his schedule get better in that situation but everyone had it get worse and 2 out of 3 bought expensive non refundable vacation packages!

Not unless you make a few big items, gateway issues. Didn’t someone else do this the last time and end up more or less getting what they wanted?

A good strategy would be to send out the detailed company opener.
