It's a cultural thing. I remember my first year here coming from RJs (where we pretty much always refused an extension), I was a little bit shocked when captains always just assumed that we would extend and that I would be fine with it. This isn't always the case and I think the culture here is slowly moving away from automatically assuming the crew will accept an extension.

Just my opinion but I think the desire to avoid filling out a fatigue report may subconsciously lean pilots into a "Complete the Mission" state. No other pilot groups have hoops to jump thru after refusing an extension

Right, same reason we have to actually call someone to call in sick, rather than a simple check box or something in iCrew.

Is that also a valid reason to not declare an emergency, because you might have to take 5 minutes to fill out of paperwork?

Sadly, I guess, I was an always extend, mission comes first kind of guy. But now in my 5th year, and suffering a chronically bad short term memory on behalf of crew scheduling and tracking (i.e. the let me scratch your back book of good deeds) I'm now a 99% non extender.

What type of airplane do we own is worth $1 billion?
If you’re talking total costs to the company (branding, NPS, etc. ) then, sure, maybe. But to say that a “hull loss” would be $1 billion is a bit of a stretch.
