Good reminder from The late Michael Crichton on the “Gell-Mann Effect”, and why to be highly skeptical of all reporting:
“Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”

You’re a pilot. You know a great deal about aviation. When you read a story about aviation, do you find yourself thinking “Boy, that’s some fine, insightful reporting?” Or do you mostly find yourself thinking “Wow, there are so many inaccuracies in that report that it was borderline criminal malfeasance?”
I find the second posit is far more common. That’s all. I’ve no idea what happened on that 350, but I took the bait and commented on it. In hindsight, there were most likely extenuating circumstances that add nuance that we will either never know, or will come out a year from now in a training aid.

Hm. Perhaps I wasn’t clear.

On the serious side, we know articles are inaccurate all the time. That said, something not good happened - as they do from time to time.

Yeah, I heard there is more to the story.
Apparently, an Eskimo rights activist breaks into the cockpit with a gun. She says something derogatory about Seward’s Folly when the pilots notice the gun is just a water pistol at which time they proceed to mock and laugh at her for it. She’s like “You think that’s funny, you interloping dogs? Watch this:
Squirt, squirt.
Right into the crack of the engine 2 master switch which immediately flames out the right. The Captain (becoming less amused) sees her aiming for the number 1 switch and instinctively leans over the pedestal and takes the second blast to the side of the head while the FO is able to subdue the perp and secure the squirt gun.
Unfortunately, the gun had been filled with airplane water and the Captain has been quarantined until it can be determined he was not infected with anything from the attack squirt.
On a positive note, the FO greased the landing in Fairbanks and apparently has a date set up with the activist after her release. In his words, “She’s off the Crazy / Hot Matrix charts!”
Goes to show you. Never believe the first reports.
