But after the restructure. Dunn, Unger and Oveur all held positions that are now over Payed. Payed came from Accounting , and worked with catering and dealt a lot with Yolk. Yolk was over Eezie.

Not a first for Delta. In the 80s, a Lawyer was the head of Flight Ops. For the life of me, I can't remember his name. But there was a Chief Pilot..."Snake" Smith. Haven't thought about that lawyer for decades, but remember he was no friend of the pilots. But then, whomever gets that position, usually isn't.

Yeah, he was a partner in Dewy Cheetem and Howe.

That was Frank Rox, but I think he was a WWII Navy pilot before going to law school. As you say, some of his arguments with pilots were required by the position, but he and Pat Malone would fiercely defend them against FAA violations.

Good catch, I had the opportunity to chat with him one day. Rox was a TBM pilot in the big war.

At NWA in the 90’s we had a VP of Flight Ops that was not a pilot. Dr Clay Foushee (Private certificate only), took over for John Kern (FAA management guy).

Foushee is one of the developers of the Personality Characteristics Inventory screening “test” used for all pilot candidates.

Kern had been a NWA new hire who was furloughed within a year of starting. He went to the FAA and rose through the ranks until NWA hired him to be the VP. They put him on the seniority list, but he only flew with instructors...meaning 2 lines guys got bought off their trips.

In both cases the name on the airline’s operating certificate was the system chief pilot.

Opinion: As long as he surrounds himself with straight-shooters, and not Yes Men, it’ll be ok.
