Thanks!, but I didn't intend to be humble. The older I get, the awesomer I was as a pup!

I'll try to edit future posts to scrub any suggestion of humility from them.

Couldn't do it now. You sorta had to slither into it. Best technique was to assume a one-legged fetal position, and guide your right foot into the well. Then grab the roof with your left hand (black paint showed every fingerprint), and pivot-flop the rest of the way.

Other unanticipated quirks: You had to ease forward at some intersections to see around fire hydrants. Waiting 10 days for a replacement windshield after a rock ding propagated. Paying $400 to have a pro fix my botched brake job. The black & gold paint showed every single speck of dust.

...but Lotus! I bought a '73 Europa JPS in 1979. Owned it until USAA figured out how risky that car/driver combination was to them. My premiums were unsustainable.

The Europa was an amazing car. I used to sling it up and down Highway 1 in California with a permanent grin on my face. The engine (non-injected twin-cam mounted right behind me), transmission (5-speed), and that awesome suspension made me think I was a great driver. I went to Track Day at Laguna Seca in '79, and met Bobby Rahal. Nice guy. Stared at my girlfriend the whole time he was talking to me. Did 4 laps in "Don't quit your day job!" time.

Cried like a baby when I sold it.

It's legacy is a quote that I repeat often to my wife (the girlfriend), uttered by a guy to his friends while watching us get into the car in Santa Cruz, "That car, that chick...THATguy?"
It may have handled great but the original Europa looked like a hearse for the vertically impaired.

OK, so I've been reading the Miata threads, they're pretty good. Some of ya'lls best work. I never paid the car no mind. That is until today.

I had to take the wife's car to the dealer for some brake work. The dealer was out of loaner cars so they rented me a Miata. Asked me if it was "OK". I thought to myself; "Aha, the guys on APC talk 'em up, why not!".

What a awesome little car. It is great. Awesome handling. I really like the steering wheel position. Having raced cars in the past, the position is almost perfect. Could use some more power though, but otherwise an awesome driving car. I'd love to rage around the track on it.

This is exactly why my first question to anyone badmouthing the Miata is, “Have you driven one?”
😁

I have the same question for people who rave about driving pre-c5 corvettes.

I was right there with you until you said you took the car to the *dealer* for some brake work. Unless it was under warranty... My God, man, why?!?

Ya see?! This is what we’ve been saying all along. Supremely fun little underpowered car to chuck around. An absolute blast!
