Interesting articles on ATL-JNB.
Any A350 experts in the crowd that can comment on the 280 ton version?

Ships 3513-3515 have the PIP and higher MTOW.

This article has a decent explanation:

The higher gross weight is pretty much meaningless out of JNB. The 2% better inflight fuel burn will help on the route.

Are you saying they can't get airborne at 280t out of JNB? The 2% reduction in burn rate is roughly 3,000 lbs on that route. Was it really that close with a full load of fuel? The extra GW gives them 24,000 lbs of additional payload. This let's them carry cargo and passengers (revenue) in addition to fuel. Without the revenue from the extra weight, the range is pointless.

Very few aircraft can take off out of JNB in the summer at max structural weight. You are almost always performance limited. Kind of like the A330 departing for AMS out of SLC with a 180 passenger limit.

It’s been a while, but I believe the higher gross weight was only 12-13,000lbs higher MTOW on the PIP jets. 603k up to 616k. Not being argumentative, just pointing out that the payload increase wasn’t all that significant.
