?? Once you run out of sick leave then you go on disability. Your pay goes to 50% as paid for by Delta disability. That is automatic. DPMA pays an additional 25% tax free immediately. Additionally you can get loss of license insurance from ALPA that will pay you additional amounts but they don’t kick in until one year on disability. DPMA fills that gap for up to one year per occurrence.

I actually took a pay CUT coming off disability and returning to NQAT while I awaited training.

It’s 25% of your highest 12 months in the last 36 including profit sharing but it is tax free so it comes close to 50% for most people. The only negative is that the next year your profit sharing will be lower (or 0) because time on disability doesn’t count as profit sharing time.

It's not as cut and dry as simply calculating the compounding of saving the monthly DMPA premium. DPMA pays out your full benefit from day 1, whereas if you're self insuring, you won't have that available until more than 20 years down the road. Also, if you do pull from your self insured funds, that ruins the compounding calculation after that.
There's certainly reason to run the math and decide if it's worth it on a case by case basis, but usually it will be worth it. If premiums rise, that could change.

Sounds of the season: literally dozens of unsolicited inverse assignment phone calls coming in at all hours of the day the last couple of days. So many uncovered trips and getting multiple calls for the same trip throughout the day and night. Are people really changing their mind like "Hmm, thats the fourth call for this same trip. Ya know what, I do wanna miss Christmas with my family and go help Ed out." I've resorted to putting my phone in airplane mode at night so I can sleep.
