Very true if an investor is using excessive leverage or shorting. If buying energy companies that break even well below current commodity prices and are returning a significant portion of FCF to shareholders via dividends/buybacks one can remain patient/solvent for a long long time.

Dr. Michael Burry was mocked for 3 years for his negative returns then made 400%+ resulting in $100m for himself and $700m for his investors shorting collaterized mortgage bonds
