All trips at delta pay a 5:15 average per day. So a 3 day pays at least 15:45, a 4 day is 21:00, etc. Generally in order to make more than that (outside of extra pay due to long sits, holiday pay, etc) you’ll need what is called a hard time trip, where you have a lot of block and/or some very long duty days that drives the pay over the 5:15 average. Due to the short stage lengths on the 717 you’ll very rarely get any significant amount over ADG for a trip.

ATL is a lot like the Dallas Cowboys. You either love it or you hate it, and if you hate it, you usually don’t have a good reason other than other people hate it.
AmEriCa’s TeAM…

That was enough for me, the hate continues.

Default 717 QOL as a Commuter

What is the quality of life of a commuting pilot on the 717? Looking at it through the lens of a ATL based pilot.

-How commutable are the trips?

-How is the seniority progression for both FO and CA?

-Any examples of what schedules look like? How many days off per month? Credit? Start and end times?

Thanks in Advance

As a 717A, I wouldn't recommend upgrading if you're sub-80 % and going to commute. If you live in base, then life isnt bad. Trip quality has gone to the wayside. Whether you are at a seniority of 300 or 13000, the trips are the same; the only thing that changes is the start and/or finish time. I know plenty of FOs who make more than junior CAs. It really comes down to what kind of QOL you want and/or whether you need certain days off.

You will get proficient in the airplane, with typical 3/4 leg days. The summers are tough with the weather, and winters can be interesting when it comes to deicing.

In that case, it's one of the best airplanes to be a new hire on, especially for seniority progression and staying in two time zones. The Vills and the Burghs are great destinations; the crews are usually friendly, and the nearby hotels and amenities are nice. RES Life on the 717 is not bad either, but without living in base, SC can be a pain. That said, I know a few guys who live in FL and can commute to SC daily. If you choose to commute, it's not hard to get a semi-commutable schedule with a little bit of seniority.

Days off vary based on how much you choose to pick up. Bidding a line also varies, depending on how you bid and where in the credit window you want to fall. For the most part, the trips have been commutable, but they seem to be trending towards an earlier start over the last few months.

HA 717 is the junior aircraft. Some are lifers due to the easy schedule with enough seniority.
3-7 legs a day, 4 -11 hour duty days. No overnights with enough seniority as well. Outer island commuters like overnights since they cut overnights in half.

Reading this post hurts my brain. I never realized we had 5, 6, or even 7 leg days. I've rarely encountered 5-leg scenarios, but they usually occur during IROP situations. One could argue that we’ve been in a constant IROP state for two years, haha.
