One data point: DTW July bid package has 640 trips. 120 of them have CLT overnights. ATL has 912 trips with 134 having CLT overnights. Either one gives you a lot of options.

There are a lot more commuters going to ATL than DTW, so less competition for the jumpseat in DTW.

Probably better seniority in DTW.

Plus being ATL based requires you to fly in and out of ATL more --> DTW the clear winner here!
What’s wrong with flying in and out of ATL? Phenomenal controllers, ramps open on both ends so no getting stuck in an alley, if you break they have spare parts or spare airplanes. Never understood all the angst about flying in and out of ATL. Someone please explain.

It’s where good rotations go to die. Reroute central. Looking forward to your nice 18 hour layover after a quick breakfast sit and 2 leg day? J/k! Here’s another turn and 10:30 at the airport hotel. And if the train comes off the tracks with a line of storms, stick a fork in it. Much like our schedules, it’s been optimized. This is before we even get to the in terminal experience.

THIS! And God help you if there’s ever a “snow event”, you’re not going anywhere!

Every winter ATL gets some snow, but every winter they act as if it’s never happened before, and the whole place shuts down for 2-3 days!

And every time you pass through you’re on airport standby!

But the 717 is mainly ATL. I don’t have those experiences. In fact, if I have a 3 hour sit and get picked up it usually ends up equal or better. Ive been rerouted more times in DTW than amywhere on this fleet. Just happened this week matter of fact. And it was a bad deal. Why would you want to be in DTW with 4 ground frequencies and 10 meters of pavement on the south side where you have to call ramp before you cross over? To each their own. Atl is super easy.

That might be true on other fleets, but reroutes on the 717 in general seem to be much less common. Most of the time if you do get a RR it’s just swapping one hub turn for another.

I flew it for 8 years. Hated the Diesel9 and the Maddog, but loved the 717. Go figure.

Because every other large airport is naturally immune to lines of storms and their effects. NYC runs perfectly when there's even the littlest of clouds in the sky. /s

Seriously. Case in point this past week. Took 6.9 days to recover from one storm.

ATL is a lot like the Dallas Cowboys. You either love it or you hate it, and if you hate it, you usually don’t have a good reason other than other people hate it.

I personally have never been rerouted in ATL - and I'm on a narrow body. I think the more in/outs of ATL the higher the chance, just because more room for thunderstorms to screw up the day. ATL isn't the terrible place everyone makes it out to be. Like bluejuice said, the ramp works very well, and absent a thunderstorm off the departure end of the runway, ATL can move some traffic.

Oh boy, saying that is like touching the seat-belt sign switch. Good luck to you.
