Define then "clean shaven". It lacks specificity. Beards are very definitive. Your interpretation here does not matter. If the pilot had just come in from a red eye, you'd seriously deny them a ride home if they had a little stubble? The union and the CPO would laugh at you.

Pretty sure a troll post.

I’ve had 2 OAL pilots request a JS that were sporting beards. Not just stubble. Told them both sorry but no.
To my knowledge the ONLY individual allowed to ride the JS with a beard is Secret Service, at least it used to say that in the FOM. FAA inspectors aren’t even allowed a beard.
Personally I hope Delta doesn’t change this rule. It’s a slippery slope. It’s pretty easy for the captain to decide beard/no beard. Trying to determine which style of Operator Chic is permitted just adds unnecessary angst to the job.

Back on the topic..
I think one can get medical waiver for just about anything so flying with facial hair is totally possible.

Outside of medicine.. My facial hair grows fast and when I was on 777 at the end of those long legs I totally had 5 pm+ shadow and CPO people would give me a double look at times.
Nowdays any inconvenience is viewed as a form of oppression so I can totally see millennials and gen X revolting/whining about it and changing the policy.

I am DPS and I bump into a lot of pilots. Haven’t seen anyone with a waiver yet.
If anyone doesn’t know how to read the FOM and violates the standard we simply don’t train and they enjoy Virginia ave for a bit longer.

We, DPS dudes, obviously can grow beards, but to fly LJOBS we have to shave Once in 9 months.

I play airsoft on my days off and I'm in special ops, I need a beard so I look like an operator.

Well actually…as the captain my interpretation is the only one that matters. But we all know the difference between a guy who just flew a red eye, and someone who hasn’t shaved in several days.

This is said without negativity. Go back, start at the beginning, track the conversation, and then comment.

yes i know the OP was not talking about the air force.

clue bird: “ive never heard of a medical condition where you cant shave” (quote is off my memory and not verbatim because i dont care enough)

if you want to be the “thread drift” police then i get it. Otherwise read the responses in order before posting. Thanks

That part of your quote perfectly sums up my thoughts about him wanting to throw off a jumpseater or refuse to fly with a pilot who doesn’t meet his interpretation of the FOM’s appearance standards.

At best, he loses the respect of many of his coworkers. At worst, the CPO doesn’t agree with him being the judge, jury, and executioner over a vaguely-defined FOM policy at the expense of the operation.

I’m not talking about growing a beard either. I’m talking about the idea that not being perfectly clean-shaven (which is not an FOM requirement) is enough to warrant throwing someone off a jumpseat or refusing to fly with them. Neither will go over well.

Well you’re probably old enough to remember when the aircraft lavatory used to have a slot for your used razor blade disposal (727, L1011). But it’s not 1975 anymore!

C’mon, just spend 2 minutes with your electric shaver and clean up that stubble before you jump seat. Was that so hard? Why give the captain a hard time? JMO. Oh, I forgot… no opinions. haha
