From what I understand that is correct. I believe they have NSLIs teach ground school, but that would not be a problem here.

I have had a good experience with the recent batch (past few years) of DPS. The DPS instructors are often recently retired with 30+ years of service or from another carrier flying the same fleet type. I have picked up more tips with from the other carrier types than anyone else, primarily because I have already heard the DAL gouge for ages. Getting away from group think and exposing oneself to new concepts is a good thing, something DAL was terrible at for most of my career (this has changed for the better). As far as SLI, I am sorry, great group, but a pilot who has never sat in the left seat is still missing a whole level of experience to teach from.

If a line pilot has a medical issue (cardiac, diabetes etc.) that places them on long term leave, and then wants to pick up a sim instructor gig, what bucket would he or she be in? DPS or SLI?

NSLI (aka DPS, formerly DGS).

DPS.

With a caveat, if it was permanent type situation, they can become an FTI, which is a full time job, with benefits (unlike DPS). It requires you to come off seniority list though.

True, but most of our SLIs have been captains at previous airlines I would imagine.

Agreed. Just seeing all the different iterations of recirc fan configurations at the gate -- all contrary to the Vol 1 -- is amazing.
