I mean define "unpaid." If you are a reserve with a RES guarantee of 72 hours and you have 2 days of PTP, your reserve guarantee is still 72 hours. They act as pre-assigned X days. They are worth zero PBS credit when bidding a regular line. That is sort of the definition of unpaid.

I mean that's sort of semantics at this point. Straight from the PBS Reference Handbook - they count as 2 of your X days on reserve. That is what matters for bidding purposes. Yes they are not days of unavailability that would reduce your reserve guarantee. They are days off (unpaid) if a regular line holder.

If you're REG and elect during vacation bidding to take the 48 hours free before primary vacation, can you still bid over them if you change your mind later? Or are they blocked off like non-fly days?

If they are treated the same as PTP days then they are blocked off in PBS entirely.

The way I see it, if you’re above the unstacking line then why not retain the tactical flexibility until PBS bidding for the PVAC month?
I agree it could be useful if junior or if you’re sure you’re going to bid reserve*, know you want those days off AND importantly know that you’ll get the PVAC you’re shooting for.
*RES is never guaranteed safe from unstacking.
It’s a nice tool for some specific cases, but I don’t think it’s necessary for many of us, and definitely not an automatic yes. More choices are better though. Glad they were able to add this for those that want it.

Another question I’d add is what would happen if you elect the 48 hours free and then decided to attach SUPP/12N days to the front of your PVAC?
I’m guessing they just push an extra 48 hours in front of the additional days, but not sure.

This is why I’m NOT checking the box.

I think the 48 hour thing is good for us. Use it if you want, or not

Most of the lines built by PBS are not near the razor thin edge of the lower end of the LCW. What PBS will do consistently, even with days off XX (however you want to manipulate with all or nothing etc), is build trips to the day before your vacay starts or worse yet the day right after it ends. For NB folks that could mean commuting on a vacay day to either get home or to be in place for the rotation start.

I’m just highlighting that it may actually take flexibility away from a senior bidder (ie top 40%-ish). No need to lock yourself down in the blind when you know it’s not going to be an issue anyways.
Example: 15 months from now maybe there’s a Hawaii trip that fits your sked perfectly, ending with a redeye 2 mornings before your PVAC. Or maybe you want those days off, but would do it if a Greenie popped up. If you can hold off any Friday/Saturday you want anyways, why take away that flexibility unnecessarily?
PBS will not jam you “consistently” unless you’re too junior to avoid unstacking. In that case, yes, it’s a great tool. That was my point.
