Correct, it really isn't rocket science.

. Boy, ain't that the truth. It's like anything else in life . Working hard is always a good attribute but timing and luck have a major part in success if you will. "Success" also is a different definition for different people.

I read a long time ago that, Luck = Preparation + Oppotunity.

The Prperation part is on you and the Oppotunity part you have to go looking for.

I've always found the harder I worked at preparation the luckier I got.

Still, this is a Feast or Famine industry, hiring right up until they furlough!

Not sure what you mean by that. I think many in the general population do not have the aptitude to become a successful career airline Pilot. Yes once you are established it seems easy but not everyone has the academic skills and discipline to become a Pilot. While I agree its not rocket surgery , IMHO it is not something that most people can do.

Just curious what percentage of the general US population do you believe has the potential for a successful long term career as a part 121 Pilot?

As someone with thousands (no exaggeration) of dual given, I agree. There are many who can’t do this. They maybe can fly a 172, but the bigger and more complex you get, along with adding an instrument rating, some reach the peak of their abilities well before 121.

Have you read the accident report for Atlas 3591 (The Prime Air 767 which was pushed over into Houston's Trinity Bay)? It's an extrememly ugly tale of a lack of aptitdue and the system failures which allowed the FO to be in that aircraft at all.

Agree with Scoop and Whoops, unless I'm completly missing what you are saying.

I did a poor job translating my thoughts into a comment. While I tend to fall on the side of "it's not rocket surgery", it does take a certain aptitude and way of thinking that not everyone possesses. I also definitely agree with the comment that once you're entrenched in the 121 world, it seems overly easy and it's easy to forget what it took to get there.

A better way to convey my opinion is, aptitude being a given, I think the money and time involved prevent a lot of people from pursuing the career to this level vs just not having the aptitude to do so.
