A little .gov goes a long way. I wish I had the answer to CFPB "protections" without the bureaucratic bloat. In a perfect world, consumers would be educated and act intelligently without a nanny state directing them. In that same perfect world, companies would behave ethically instead of targeting vulnerable consumers with crappy products. The nation's food supply comes to mind, followed by targeting children with vapes, etc... I could get behind a little CFPB if it were supplemented with consumer education in our school systems. Replace DEI with Consumer Education Initiatives...

the cfpb had 1500 employees… to protect 370m people in a near $30t economy. on what do you base that it was a case of bureaucratic bloat?

Default Tariffs and Substitution

There was a brief discussion of substitution in a Fidelity webinar on tariffs today. The recording isn't posted yet, but a pdf commentary is available. Market Sense Weekly Webinar Fidelity
Tariffs and the global markets asset class views

-Whiskey and bourbon instead of Tequila and Scotch? In related news, Buffalo Trace has been flooding since yesterday.
-What raw materials are potential targets for substitution?
-Will Made in USA NB breakout of the web belt and jorts consumer segment?

I did not (check a few posts farther back for that person), although I'm not an expert on athletic shoe prices. I'm too young for New Balance but too old for Nike so I go with Reebok.

Now do the other side. How many compliance officers, regulatory analysts, data processors, auditors, risk managers, HR representatives and policy trainers are required to meet the demands of 1,500 .govs?

Consumer protection is a worthwhile cause but the burden on the country is far greater than just CFPB staff. The bloat created by regulation happens inside the regulated institutions, not just the gov. Regulation can be leveraged by large firms to create barriers to entry for smaller competitors stifling competition in highly regulated industries. Gotta look at all sides of the equation.

You’re right. Large corporations should be able to do whatever the hell they want to whomever they want.

/S/ Yes you completely encapsulated my opinion in one comment. I want large corporations taking advantage of consumers who aren't as smart as me so I can benefit from better terms at the expense of the ill informed. While we're at it, let's keep financial education out of the classroom so it's easier to manipulate the peasants. /S/
