So something completely different: Has anyone else laid eyes on some of the Turkish Airlines FA's? I guess the junior ones get the trips to Accra! Talk about eye candy.
Tis true. Somewhere around 19 DC9s.
But we did have 71 DC9s in 2008. So 88 717s - 71 DC9s = 17 GROWTH JETS!
In 2015. Or 8 years after the merger.
But no worries, 17 is halfway to the goal of having as many mainline jets in 2015 as we did in 2008. The MD90s (if) at 65 frames - 2 or 3 spares will help get back to making us whole. Or 2008 + 4!
Of course that requires ASM growth even with DCI@450!
Of course, remember... future success through expanded margins! Limited back-fill! Improved productivity! Not going on any (growth) benders! We're going to de-risk and de-leverage! Grind down net debt some form or fashion! The goal - investment grade! Oh and growth... in global consolidation!
Not that there is anything wrong with that. Wise is not always preferable for employees but the question is should we just get used to the idea of being in the same place in 2015 that you were in 2009?
I mean this is the movement roller coaster we all want to be on...

But it's not the one we're on. This is probably ours, or at least Bar's:

Timbo - Surely you did not read DALPAs NN on the potential hiring related to the TA and subsequent contract. We will need like 3000 more pilots in the next few years. Unless:
- We are in a recession (we Are)
- Europe is in turmoil (it is)
- DAL Pilots will mostly try to fly 100 hours/month (they will)
- Oil is expensive (it is)
- a hurricane appears in 2013 ( it will)
- a volcano erupts ( maybe
)
- We put more passengers on ALK next year (we will)
- Some sort of natural disaster occurs somewhere in the world (it will)
Other than the above I think we will be hiring gangbusters!

I was never at a regional/lcc that had explosive growth so I can't see it through those eyes.
Of course I want Richard to be smart and make all the right moves, but it would be really really nice to hire 3000 pilots, sooner rather than later. How are we gonna get Boomer on the list if we don't start hiring?
This summer, we've been living at the beach. One of my neighbors, about 4 doors down is a retired Exxon executive. We had a discussion about the trainer refinery - a topic that he knew more about than me - by far...He was visibly and animatedly positive that it was a brilliant move..."Genius" was his word choice...FWIW.
I've got time to let the puzzle pieces fall into place. Sooner is better than later though.
Also, I should have bought that picture of me and my wife on the roller coaster to keep it off the web. Bar should have sat at the back...
Also those numbers of guys out for those event used to not be included in the contractual staffing formula and now those will. It is actually one of the items (albeit smaller items) that eats away at the "300 pilot reduction" number tossed around.
My guess is interviews starting after new year and classes by early spring for all the 717/739's that start arriving in the summer.

Growth...I forgot what that feels like. Kinda like Peter Pan in Neverland.

Richard may be a genius. However, it is is difficult not to watch what is happening at Comair, as well as the rhetoric which preceded this event, without realizing Delta is in trail spacing going into the exact same storm.
Our capacity constraints drive our average longevity higher as our "SkyTeam Parasites," oops, "partners" get the latest and greatest equipment. Having as many as 11 incompatible employee groups* and 10 different aircraft types serving one reliever airport prevents our company from being able to schedule efficiently, or recover effectively. (maybe we should just open a transportation museum, we have one of nearly everything).
On mark, management is already beginning to complain about increases in operational costs. When squeezed they will come to us to try to cover the inefficiencies they created by trying so damn hard to outsource our work.
There are several areas where we need to come at this problem, but like any other addict, we first have to get those in charge to face the fact that their outsourcing plan has failed. In crew rooms and union meeting rooms we need to rub their noses in the fact that no one is evaluating our Company's overall performance using numbers which includes the $5 + billion dollars in un-budgeted expenses spent trying to outsource our core product.

Remember this teaser?
Hi everybody, this is Steve Dickson with the weekly Flight Operations Update for Friday June 8th.
....
Finally, I know the big question out there on the line as you hear about mainline growth is how that will impact our pilot staffing and whether it will jumpstart pilot hiring. It’s been no secret that we are looking at a wave of pilot retirements over the next few years as pilots begin to approach age 65. Because of that, our pilot hiring group has remained active since we stopped our last round of hiring in 2010, and we are prepared to start the hiring process on short notice. While our hiring is ultimately based on the Network block hour plan, which in turn is affected by the economy, all indications are that the addition of 717s and the opportunity for pilots to take advantage of the Pilot Retirement Medical Account (RMA) early retirement option will accelerate movement across the seniority list and require us to begin hiring earlier than the planned pilot retirements alone would have. If Delta can continue to execute its business plan, including the 717s, and barring an economic downturn or other unanticipated event, we could begin the hiring process as early as the last quarter of this year.

Mmmmmmmmmm.....New Hires.
