CNBC articles last point: “They don’t need to cut prices further—they need to convey a sense of value,” he said. “Consumers need to be cajoled into believing that they are getting a good deal.”

So are you talking about how someone feels when they buy a $151 roundtrip ticket on AirTran and feel like they got a good deal because it was less expensive than the $150 roundtrip ticket on the mega giant price gouging Delta?

You know in my life before becoming a Delta pilot and I was buying tickets I'd buy on AirTran to my hometown even when the price was equal because I preferred the 717 over the CRJ-200. And when the Delta price was double AirTran, I bought AirTran. For the same money I got a better plane and radio. Heck, if I the choice was between the 717 and 737 I took the 717. But if it was an MD-88 vs AirTran I took the 88 because I felt then that AirTran was an over grown regional and at least Delta would be more likely to be on time. Or something along those lines.

I do not deny that could happen. But I fear any discussion about UAL being saved because it is based in ORD or is too big to fail to begin with would become too political for what is allowed on these threads. All I can say, at this point I don't think they'd be saved or saved in their current form but it'd be a good thread to start BigGuns.

Speaking of UAL, where are they really? I've read the news and a couple of blogs on it but not sure I really understand where they sit going forward as it relates to us?

From what I can tell UAL revenues down 25%, bonds sold at 17% interest to raise cash, a $2.23/share loss which was better than the expected $2.56/share, a 7% reduction in international and a profit based solely off fuel hedging.

Who ever stated that this was a possibility????

BTW there is nothing wrong with having two or three terminals at an airport.

Believe it or not...as hush hush as you've been about everything that's going on, some of the folks up in NY have freely been dishing out all the latest happenings in regard to everything going on up there.

Sounds like most is a done deal, and the rest is pretty dang close.

What deal are you referring to?

What makes you think that, I was referring to something in NYC? I am sure that those people do not even know what SEC stands for.

If there is a deal up there, all of that talk could lead to whatever it is falling though.

I do not think that the American People will have the stomach to lend any more. Maybe foreign ownership if they will not allow someone to buy parts of them.

Delta reported on Wednesday a net loss of $257 million, or $0.31 per share, for the quarter ending June 30. Excluding merger-related expenses and $390 million in realized fuel hedge losses, Delta’s net profit for the quarter was $191 million. The airline generated $834 million in operating cash flow during the quarter and had $5.4 billion in unrestricted liquidity as of June 30.

“The industry faces substantial challenges from unprecedented revenue declines and volatile fuel prices, but Delta is the best positioned network carrier to weather these economic conditions,” said Richard. “I want to thank the Delta people for their hard work and dedication during these difficult times. Delta has more flexibility and a proven track record of acting quickly to adapt our business to economic challenges. We continue to focus on cost discipline and preserving liquidity, while adjusting our fleet and network and accelerating merger benefits.”

Delta announced its financial results during a week when other major U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, Continental Airlines and United Airlines, also reported quarterly losses. Southwest Airlines reported a $54 million profit for the quarter, but reported concerns around third-quarter losses. JetBlue, Alaska and US Airways will report quarterly results on Thursday.

“The global recession has caused Delta’s revenues to decline more than $3 billion for the first six months of the year,” Hank Halter, s.v.p and chief financial officer, said in a memo to employees. “We are not planning for any meaningful recovery in the coming months and no longer expect to be profitable this year. In light of this, we must continue to adapt our business model to this changing environment. We have a responsibility to all our stakeholders – our employees, shareowners, and customers – to ensure that Delta not just survives but thrives.”
