So, I sign up. I'm a union guy now. But isn't my union supposed to be fighting to improve our contract for me and my fellow pilots? Sure doesn't seem like they're working to get our pay to where MOST of us think it should be. Why not more talk about where our pay should be? Why does my union spend more time talking about the threat the company keeps pointing to--foreign carriers? Sure, I get it, they're a threat to pilot jobs in our country. But doesn't it seem convenient that that's the topic we hear so much about from our union and the company as far as what we should be concerned about? And if it's not that then it's new FAA rules. Why don't I hear hardly anything about how we need to get our pay back to where it should be? (I say hardly, because I haven't heard anything, but maybe there's been some mention of this as an objective somewhere). It's as if they don't want to attract any negative attention from the company or show any indication of being on a different page from the company. So, yes, DALPA, you convinced me to join your union, but it's weird--I don't feel like I'm in a union based on how hunky dory the relationship is. The last thing I'm suggesting is that DALPA seek a contentious relationship; I don't pretend to think that would be good for any of us. But the BFF relationship? I guess that's good if you like the status quo.
The vast majority of fDAL guys are like you. It's just that there's a higher percentage of folks who only want to be in a pretend union, than any other group of pilots I've seen.

Amen to that. You two either agree to disagree, or find a bar somewhere and hug it out.
WDE!

I jumpseat a lot, mostly with south crews. I also eat and drink with south crews a lot in Narita. I guess none of that counts in your world?

I agree with that for the most part. Except when you run across some fDAL line pilot policing uniform standards in the terminal. Or some fDAL guy who stands at the doorway pre departure, and gives a PA on how many traps he's got in the F14 and F18...and even though the copilot wasn't military, he's still a fine pilot. We just didn't have those kind of tight a$$es at NWA. The Western and Pan Am guys tell me the same thing.

Oh now the truth comes out. You're angry that DPA's largest membership population is Atlanta. I understand.

Witnessed that guy myself, TOTD for sure.

What I really sat wondering about as he retreated to the cockpit after a five minute P.A. including giving all the women his phone number which was supposedly 1-800-HOT-CAPTAIN (you can't make this stuff up), was how on earth has this been allowed to continue for what I imagine is, 30-40 flights a month, for years on end??

Anyway back on topic . . .

Why would you say that? I don't think you've done anything but disagree with me since I got here...yet I'm still responding to you cordially.

Carl
I didn't have a rocking chair nor were there any union or analogous to union questions. I don't know anyone that had any union questions. The rocking chair has been gone for many years and was just a decoration choice anyways.

Now Carl,

You know that I generally agree with most of your opinions. But, I have to check you on this one.

From what I can remember in my shrink interview, he asked mostly about my family, their views about me leaving the military and how they felt about me working for the airlines. I can't remember any questions about unions.

Now, my buddy said the first question asked was "How do you feel about your sisters?"

His response was "I love them, but I don't want to sleep with them."

The shrink responded "That's all I've got."

He was hired.

If you had ever seen his sisters, you wouldn't want to sleep with them either.

Carl my shrink was not a dude. SHE didn't even ask a question remotely involving union or union thought. I got the impression the whole test and couch session was to make sure I wasn't a nut job, that I had integrity and was a well balanced individual. But you probably have all the answers. What do I know. I only had first hand experience with it. Btw, I was also on my previous carriers union organizing committee. I'm a south guy too. You need to step back some day from the keyboard and realize some of the stuff you post can be rude and devisive. Why do you think it's appropriate to lump all former dal south pilots into one basket? Prejudice. I fly with a ton of mixed crews. I usually can't tell unless the subject of past lives comes up. Were all just a bunch of type 'A' folks that started out wanting to fly planes. We all took a different path but ended up Delta pilots. ...hopefully one day in unity.

If you had actually read any of my posts, you'd see I did not lump all fDAL guys into one basket.
