Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?
Two airframes is rarely cost effective verses one. That is especially true on international flights. 3 to 4 pilots becomes 6 to 8. One gate becomes two. Additional route authorities become needed and your maintenance costs almost double. Word is Delta is looking at only two options. The 777-300 or the A350-1000. The A330's would be 767 replacements.
IOW, taking your above statement to the extreme, we would fly a single mothership daily to Europe.
The question was more about the 747 vs 777 comparison than the 747 vs 330. However, there are basic comparisons between all three that equate to range, fuel burn/measureable unit, cargo capacity and passenger capacity.
In all those measureable metrics, IMO the 744 provides the least flexibility per comparable.
It may take two a330s to fully replace a 744, but that isn't necessarily cost ineffective or bad.

I wasn't making that comparison, I was saying it doesn't make sense to assume the 330 would replace the 747 and T square, in his position, knows it too, and was using it as another opportunity to make a crack about LBP. It was another drive by. And his "I know something you don't, you heard it here...again", LCA comment on top of it all. Come on, man.
As far as all the "metrics" go, I don't make those decisions and have better things to do than speculate on what aircraft are coming/not coming.
I care that things are going well, don't get me wrong, and as a 14 year 75/76 FO, I'm finally moving up a little after a 4 year back slide, that's good. I think the 747-800, A380, 777-300 would all be ideal replacements because "bigger pays more" but until those 747's are parked in the desert, hopefully a long time from now, and the DTW- NGO or whatever route the 747 typically works, has an A330 parked at it, I'm not going to get worked up over it. It's not going to happen this year, or next, so I'm going to enjoy watching my kids grow up instead of getting wrapped up in the minutiae of Delta's order books.
Sorry for the rant, I got both kids...5 and 3... In bed by 8:00 CDT and am indulging in a pop, or two.

And enjoy your pop, or two, you've earned it!
truth be told, I dont fix planes, I dont cater planes, I dont buy planes... I may finance them... but really I just stick to flying them.

It's Win Win!
Maybe if we give up -all- of our profit sharing for C2015 they'll buy some used A319's!

Max gross on the 321 is 207,000, IIRC. That's around 20,000 lbs more than the 739. The motors are 5000 lbs more thrust per side at 33k vice 28 and change. We will be configuring them with around 192 seats.
