The regs have changed since 1980. The 737 already has the sight picture of a Sherman tank. They could have put longer gear on it years ago, instead of mashing the engine cowls and putting a tailskid on the back. I just hope the FAA doesn't give them a pass on that.

That's the problem, the only thing constant is change. Things can look great for going to one airline today, but a CEO or two down the road can turn things to crap. All you can do is make the best decision for yourself with the best information available today, and hope tomorrow remains somewhat the same, but it rarely does.

You should copyright that quote! The entire airline career perspective can be boiled down to that.

And how is that different from any other reserve (or regular) gig, at any airline, any time in the past?

The question is, how does our reserve system compare to others systems? While not perfect I would say our reserve system is pretty good in the aggregate. I am top third of the category but bid reserve on purpose occasionally. Sometimes it is great, sometimes I ask "what were you thinking?" But I wouldn't have even considered it if it weren't worth it. I'm not sure that I would even consider bidding reserve at other airlines...or earlier eras here at DAL.

Well I've been watching and working in the industry for the past 37 years, with friends who went to Eastern, Piedmont, Pan Am and TWA when all those looked like the right place to go at the time.

If I had gone to American instead of Delta 30 years ago, I'd still have a retirement plan, a lot more 777's and both BOS and MIA to fly out of, rather than commuting to ATL for the past 19 years. But at that time, AA had the never ending B scale.

You just never know what's going to happen tomorrow.

Also:

Being senior as a line holder is a reasonably good deal! Junior? Not so much

Being senior while bidding vacation is a reasonably good deal! Junior? Not so much

Being senior while bidding on AE's is a reasonably good deal! Junior? Not so much

IMO our reserve system seems as balanced as possible, and I'm relatively junior in category.

All correct, and you could condense it to just this:

If you're junior, it sucks to be you!

It's all relative.

Ask your captain on the next long leg....

Would you rather be junior and 30, or senior and 60?
