Just grab an E-timetable and search for places we used to fly. You'll see it's all AF-KLM now, or Virgin. Or just ask your 20 year co-pilot how things are working out. While UAL expands to secondary cities of 10 million in Asia, we drop service altogether to BKK. KAL and China Eastern will fill in nicely with A380's and 777-300's. Profits to managers, pilots not so much. Our scope ship has sailed, sailing. When those ER's start timing out, get ready for the coup de gras. UAL has west coast based 787, 747, and 777 pilots because they have a real network, with real airplanes. I know people there way, way junior to me living the dream. Scope was important. We F'd it up.

So again how much actual flying have we lost. How many pilot jobs, how many block hours?

Well didn't the PWA require 316(?) departures in NRT? Up until a couple years ago when we gave that away. At the time, if we didn't keep the departures, the code sharing had to stop. Was that a good move on our part? Did we lose NRT flying?

The last full year statistics available are for 2015. So comparing with 2014, Delta mainline lost about 5500 widebody block hours- a small percentage. However, this is during a period when overall international block hours were growing at high single digit rates.

As to jobs lost, it's more like jobs gained by our JV partners. The implosion of the RJ scheme has led to an increase in domestic mainline flying. That combined with retirements has mitigated any job losses.

Going forward, our net widebody fleet- including 7ER is down 7 airframes. So 2016 looks to continue that trend in the face of increasing international growth.

Pilot ignorance is amazing. The contract required we maintain 316 departures out of Narita only if the company maintained one small code share into Narita. That code share was generating about 250,000 a year in revenue! If the company dropped the code share we had zero protections for the Narita flying. Zero as in none. We were able to trade that for Pacific wide protections. Even Bill Bartels was touting that agreement as a significant acheivment of the Roberts administration. Strangely however he voted against it while touting it as a great deal for the pilots.

"""The existing Section 1 E. 2. prohibits code share on Fifth Freedom flights from Japan to Asian cities beyond Japan unless 316 weekly NRT slots are utilized. The 316 slots protected 80 percent of the slots that were in use when this provision was negotiated in 1998."""

You may be amazed by pilot ignorance but this was not communicated effectively and in the opinion of some was an inadequate trade. I fault the previous administration for their lack of transparency and poor communication about the lowered protection and metric conversion used in that theater. They operated in complete isolation and darkness to avoid oppositional voices until the deal was done and it was too late.

Is this your justification for the social media beatdown of the trade? Sometimes, pilots don't listen to what they don't want to hear.

And now we see topics about increased JV coverage and whatnot, and are incensed. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

But hey let's keep those big RJs out.
