I find it interesting that guys always compare the 737NG to the MD-88. You are comparing an updated Boeing with an outdated MD. How about comparing a 717 to the 737-200. FWIW I have flown the DC-9, C-9B, MD-88, MD-90, 737-200, and the NGs (C-40s, 700s and 800s) but not the 717. All have their quirks and I liked them all.
The biggest deficiency in the group is the tight cockpit - especially the NGs - I am not sure that a 7+ block in a NG would be allowed legally as an interrogation method by the current Administration

If you're within 25-30 miles of TOD, don't do a cruise altitude change, just select "Descend Now". Multiple cruise altitude changes, especially coupled with speed changes/crossing restriction changes by ATC can get the hamsters to spin the wheel too fast. And it reduces the number of pages you have to type things on.
