Nice try........... and you are welcome. You have had the best contract in the industry for a lot longer than you might have had otherwise.:p

I get TVM, LBP is not the purest answer. The best answer is to have seat/equipment pay that extends past a 12 year wall.

Let's carry finis "my 2004 pay rate and my 2014 pay rate are basically the same" argument to absurdity (trust me, we won't have to go far---it's already an absurd position).

Year 1 717 F/O hourly pay is $68.08. At the top of the food chain is 777 Capt pay at $262.38/hr.

Hypothetically, if pay rates were to decline a total of 76% across the board over a 30 year period, where at the end of that period today's new hire would make $68.08/hr as a 777 Capt, that Capt could then crow that pay rates are "about the same" over that 30 year period. Victory!

Finis--you shouldn't be comparing 2004 7ER pay to 2014 777 pay. Apples to oranges.

It's a fact that the 2014 777 rates are approximately 20% LOWER than 2004 777 rates. Plus it takes over $401/hr in TODAY'S dollars to equal $319.61/hr in 2004 dollars. That's the comparison you should be using.

I don't begrudge you for being content with what you have. If you're satisfied with what you're being paid then good for you. But I think most people here see through your transparent argument. At least Carl and I do. :D

Let's get one thing straight, I'm not happy with the pay rates. What I was alluding to is that there is much more to a contract then pay rates and under our current contract I'm making more money despite no change in hourly rates. Timbo mentioned " soft" money in a recent post and I agree with him. Focusing on just pay rates is myopic at best. OBTW I think we will be pushing for north of 20% on pay rates in 2015, just an opinion.

Nice rant. You might want to fact check though.

In October, 1986 when the merger was announced, Western had a total pilot force of about 1500 spread through SLC, SEA, SFO, and LAX. I'm pretty sure DEN and MSP were already closed. Delta grew the LAX operation in the early 90's and got to about 200 departures peak per day from all 5 LAX basin airports, but in my memory the base never got over 1000 pilots. We started shrinking LAX in the mid to late 90's (737 base went away first around 1996?), and as we closed the failed PDX/LAX west coast international MD-11/L15 experiment LAX got hammered. We pulled out of all the Mexican beach markets (ACA, IXT, MZT, PVR), ended seasonal ANC and FAI, and Canadian Open Skies killed YVR, YYC and YEG. We went down to about 70 departures per day from only 3 basin airports.

All that happened before any code share with Alaska. The codeshare didn't become a "big deal" until after the merger.

BTW, last year I posted pax numbers from LAX basin since the mid 90's. Delta was growing over the last couple of years. ALA was shrinking/consolidating. So with the codeshare Delta grew...

The facts don't support your rant.

btw, USAir used to be #1 in LAX. Then UAL was #1. DAL tried it for a while. SWA became top dog for a brief period. AMR tried it once before and as AAL appears to be trying again. It's a tough geographic location to be a true "hub."

2004 rates:

767..... $267.32. ($262.38 for the 777 in 2014)
L1011...$288.92
L1011...$296.94
767-4....$301.89
MD-11...$304.86
777.......$319.61

To still be paid $5 per hour less than you were 10 years ago even though you've climbed 5 pay positions to get it is not exactly something to be crowing about.

Carl

OK, rolling thunder gurus, 39 hours of credit in July for vacation at the end of the month. I am also senior, so I assume getting the beginning of JUly off will not be a problem. With an ALV of 84, how many reserve days will I have to do, and is the strategy just to bid the beginning days of the month off? Thanks

I had an ER Captain on a long trip to GRU look at me and go "Sex, politics, religion, you chose." :D

I said nah. He said, "okay, I'll start. My son's girlfriend is hot, I know they're out in the car having sex so I told him to take it upstairs. There is no God. Bush belongs in the Hague."

I was laughing so hard, I had nothing to say. We were polar opposites but I enjoyed flying with him.

One of my best trips was a 12 day DC10 Asia trip with a guy who was my polar opposite. It sharted out with him asking me who I had in the election. We were barely through 10,000' on the first leg. Taught me not to take stuff so seriously.

I bet you. $50,000 that those two guys would get along perfectly, too.

I'll take a stab at it. Sounds like you have 12 days of vacation in July. With an 80 hour reserve guarantee, that will give you 87:00 hours of pay if you bid reserve. Since July is a 30 day month, you have 18 days available if you bid reserve. According to the table in Section 12 for an 80 hour guarantee and 18 days available, you should get 7 X days (8 if your category gets the extra X day. Look on the first page of the Navtech website to see if you do.)

If you want to try and do rolling thunder, the best way is to bid all your X days at the beginning of the month and put a greenslip in to be awarded trips thru the 18th. To up your chances, do two other things. Do not put in any restrictions if at all possible and make sure you also put in for out of base greenslips with no conflict too. Make sure you put in a "process until date" of, say, July 18th so if you do get a greenslip and your days off roll over, you are already set up for the next one if it becomes available.

Good Luck!

Denny

I guess you can say management salary has tripled since 2009 as a percentage of operating revenue, while pilot salary as a percentage of operating revenue is lower than it was in 2009.

And pilot salary as a percentage of operating revenue is 20% lower now than it was in 2005.

Thanks finis, and I copy you now on what you were trying to say. But you led this off with comments about your pay rate and how it's basically the same now as it was in 2004. With regard to that comment of yours, I do hope you see that it is nothing to be crowing about.

I definitely agree with your later comments and Timbo's comments about soft money and work rules, but scope is still my number one. None of this will be possible however without a union who demands it, and a membership who is ultimately willing to walk away from the job. Without those two things, we'll all just take what Richard is willing to give and not a penny more.
