I wasn't thinking, I went in January, so it was expensive. Food on the mid-grade side was so so, the buffet was better than the restaurants. I didn't like the cruise ship feel of lining up and marching in mass to breakfast, marching to the beach, marching to lunch, etc.

Agree.
The two "Palaces" are where the good food and liquor is. Significant upgrade from the other RIUs.
OTOH, I think you can get Bambu or Taino for around $40/night right now.
But they are more crowded and do have that cruise ship feel.
