Waves... I'm not a hater... I would tend to agree with you ... if I was you. It probably isn't worth the paper it's printed on but I see it more like Sailingfun. There are some big disincentives for the company to furlough and it has given me a little job security at the bottom. I also see it as a round about scope protection which benefits everyone.
I totally understand your point of view, and we certainly need something in place to limit the company's ability to play Yo-Yo with the bottom guys; however, an anology comes to mind. An NFC is sort of like having home insurance in Florida without hurricane coverage. It gives one a false sense of security and it works real well for small storms, but when the weather turns real bad, it doesn't do much for the hurricane victim whatsoever. Think of an NFC as a very expensive fair weather clause. Case in point, years ago during our first furlough, we were misled into believing it would afford furlough protection. We were wrong. The next time ALPA told us, and I quote" This time our NFC is iron clad." We were wrong again. Let me repeat, I'm not advocating that we should not have protections for our junior pilots. Just like our current government, I have no solutions, I'm just highlighting the obvious here. Remember, new contracts are negotiated with a finite and company determined amount of money for pilot compensation. In simplistic terms, the company says, "Here is a bag of money, each and every item on your list costs a specific amount. Divide it up however you want to." As I mentioned, scope is interrelated with an NFC and has a similar goal. It definitely benefits all of us and limits outsourcing. It too is very expensive and not iron clad. Just as a small example, just look at the Delta Elite program. There are pros and cons for this issue as well; nevertheless, it could be construed as outsourcing too. Some of you will look at my NFC view point as being selfish, but please don't read that into my dissertation, because this is not the point nor my view at all. The point here is that soon we will be negotiating a new contract. I just want everyone to better understand what exactly they are buying and/or substituting for cash or other important items on the menu. Have no worry's, ALPA must always be politically correct with an NFC and you will never see it completely go away. How much each pilot wants to pay for an NFC is of course a personal decision made by each and every one of us. The Wilson Poll is how this becomes relevant. Later, my friend. |
You guys are right. Enough said about furloughs. Bring on the new guys.

Yes to that... Will they get the Old Delta spiel during their interview or the NWA? Maybe we should hire some furloughed AA and UA pilots to hire them, just to mix it up a bit....:D
By the way guys, as a former insider to the hiring process, if the MMPI is still given, the tests in between were used more as a distraction to ensure your answers were consistent. One still needed to pass these exams, but their real purpose was truly a hidden one. Just FYI. |
