Delta, Boeing revise 787 purchase deal

Delta and The Boeing Co. have finalized an agreement regarding Delta’s purchase of 18 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, originally ordered by Northwest Airlines.

Under the agreement, disclosed Monday in a quarterly financial filing, Delta remains a 787 customer, and will begin accepting the aircraft at a rate of six per year starting in 2020.

Under the original order, Delta was going to start taking the aircraft in 2008. Boeing was unable to meet the original delivery date, which is why the agreement was re-negotiated.

Delta has the youngest widebody transoceanic fleet among the major U.S. carriers, with an average aircraft age of 11 years.

Bingo.....NWA did that as well. Both DAL and NWA maneuvered into BK, parked jets, busted union (NWA Mechs) and generally made for as lean an operation as possible.

Management has stated over and over again for the last year or two that they have no intention of any wide body aircraft purchases until at least 2015. They are happy with the international fleet they have now. The decision to keep the 747's in operation mean the 777 delivery positions the next few years will not be exercised. In fact Delta has to commit to those deliveries 18 months prior. They have let every position lapse since the delivery of the last 2 777's.

All 777's are owned by Delta. 12 of the 16 747's are leased. I have no idea of the lease expiration dates but with the money being put into new interiors and IFE I suspect they have locked them up for at least 5 years.

I would be somewhat stunned to see CAL let their 767-400 aircraft go. They are a almost perfect Europe aircraft. If they do get rid of them I am sure they will go to great lengths to make sure Delta does not get them.

The FAA approved them for 2 config in one category. That way they are able to run the airline about 1000 pilots understaffed, according to their PBS provider.
They pushhed hard for 3 configs on the 737, but the FAA wouldn't allow it, thats why their NGs have rounds displayed, like at SWA.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released international traffic results for September today, reported that international passenger traffic had a 10.5% year-on-year increase which is significantly stronger than the 6.5% rise recorded for August. International freight traffic recorded a 14.8% year-on-year increase, which is significantly weaker than the 19.0% rise recorded in August. The contrast between the performance of freight and passenger markets provides a mixed picture for industry performance. Seasonally adjusted figures show that, compared to the previous month (August), passenger traffic in September expanded by 2.1% while freight markets contracted by an equal 2.1%.
