Carrying a surplus of that size is very cheap operational insurance and buys time making sure you got it right instead of blowing the dam and then realizing you should have waited longer.

Uh oh…

That makes sense but it's more of an example of every airlines' mentality. Most places will ALWAYS run the Captain side short because they cost more, especially at the regional level. They want to let them flow for this reason I bet, purely $$$ based.

It's cheaper to pay 1 pilot than it is to pay 2 pilots, but what do i know...
I don't count real good.

And knowing HK, yes $60k is a huge deal to HIS (singular) bottom line.

No one doubts the ruthless cost savings mentality of regional/RFP/ACMI executives. But at the same time they know where their money comes from. That doesn't mean they still don't get burned from their own short sighted greed or misjudgment, but I'm sure any manager at CPZ knows the ramafications from DL, their only "customer", of significantly harming their operation from something as basic, guaranteed and predictable as that. Another variable is attrition outside the flow as the industry/hiring market rapidly starts to pick up steam. If CPZ staffed the absolute min and threw flows to DL indoc the second they could then got caught stuck in the chocks they would be in trouble. DL has made and makes bad decisions WRT regional providers, but one thing they always make sure they have is a big hammer to pound regionals that drop the ball operationally.

They might sit around all night worrying about how to save 2 cents in per diem off a 5 day, but they know if they get burned from something as basic as this they will get punished hard. There is a cost to hold back but it is very minimal, they carried it last time and they are carring it now at least to some degree.

You know, that ain't half bad when you consider how much they need to spread the love around in the training department. At least it ain't 85 NYCM88B that need to be filled.

Do these unfilled positions account for folks that are in the new hire classes that have been awarded positions?

They should. A position can not be offered to a new hire unless it has already been put out as a bid and unfilled.

No. At least four did not get called.

Timbo 02-06-2014 08:36 AM

Anyone know what the average ages are of the two(?) new hire classes so far?

Not the furlough bypass guys, but the true 'new hires' ie. off the street and/or flows? And what's the percentage of Civ. only vs. Mil?

I'm sure it's going to change over time as they get the training dept. spooled up, both the age and the C/M%, I'm just trying to compare today's hiring with that of years gone by.
