Questions for you:
1. Did your friend claim the interview panel told him he didn't qualify by one point?
2. Have you ever heard of the interviewers explaining to a candidate (or his friend on the inside) specifically why he wasn't offered a job before this?
*Of course I'd hope no newhire does this in real life. We have bigger fish to fry. Interview questions are what they are. It's all part of the game.

The hat question is a lose-lose for the company and the candidates.

OP, did you even think a little before posting? It's called "critical thinking" and apparently you don't possess the skill. Nobody knows that he or she missed being hired by one point. HR guards that info like the Crown Jewels. In fact, I'm betting the interview scores are destroyed after the process to protect against all kinds of litigation. The interviewers are extremely tight lipped about the process and last I heard there are only 3 guys doing scoring. Bottom line: you sucked back a hook, some line and sinker from some guy who tanked the interview. And then you posted his fantasy. Catfish bait.

As an FO I would not question someone that is not part of my crew. You have no idea why they are minus the hat, lost, forgot, etc.
If it is your captain or FO you could ask why they don't wear the hat.
If pushed further on the question in the interview then pro stans if it's habitual but never a chief pilot.
Most wear the hat so it is the exception to see a pilot without it.

When I was interviewed, I came off active duty from a foreign station with a foreign air force. I had no gouge. None. I remember a question I was asked about what would you do if a Flt Att took a bottle of wine off the airplane for the van ride to the hotel. I hemmed hawed and tapdanced because I'd never even thought of this kind of question. Finally, I said I'd tell her to put it back on the plane. The interviewer said I was a party pooper. Dont overthink this stuff. Im pretty sure fedex and UPS dont have these kinds of questions.

The hat question and others like it will remain. As others have posted, you have to think to yourself why are they asking this question to me? What does the question represent? Leadership skills? Communication skills? Judgement skills? Following the company policy or procedure? What are they trying to learn about me?
Once you answer those questions you will understand why they ask these types of questions at the interview.

All questions are asked to find out who you are.... delta used to ask and got sued for crossing the line with 'finding out' who you are.....
Had the admin lady sweating in asking me about every which way indirectly possible about my marital status. Finally asked her...' is there something specific you want to know?'
she says, 'well, yes..... are you married?' hmm..... can you legally ask me that?.....' no'. Okay, as long as we understand that..... yes, I am married.
Which of course wasn't what she was trying to 'find out' at all. given todays corporate 'enlightenment'...... I get a good laugh every time I think about it.....
