Right I get that but their options were either wait at that gate and see if they would get on a flight oversold by 10+ or take a sure thing that leaves at the same time to another city.

Ended up hopping a train to London to catch a wide open LHR-BOS in business class. The other option was train to AMS and catch a wide open flight there. Obviously taxes are much cheaper from AMS. The last minute train tickets were the real kick in the groin.

I'd start with travelnet, you can see some numbers there, not sure how accurate they are. Other than that you can check the myIDtravel site for a ZED and see what kind of smiley face you get.
