Gate check bag for commuting
How do you folks deal with pushy gate agents that absolutely will not take "I'm working when I get to [insert destination here], and therefore I cannot gate check my bag" for an answer?
More often than not, there is sufficient space in the overhead bins/closet, and the FAs are more than accomodating. Today was a great example of where neither the gate agents nor the FAs were interested in any of the many pilots commuting on my flight asking them to not check our bags. Instead, the ramper quite literally took them from our hands as the gate agent yelled behind us in the jet bridge "90 seconds to close!"
Have other folks experienced this? It makes either a close commute to work even more stressful or making that second flight of a two-leg commute impossible, in some cases. What say you?

Only happened to me once, but when it did, I called scheduling, informed them the flight I was operating would be delayed due to having to gate check, casually went to baggage claim, casually went back through security, then hit McD's for a quick meal. Received call from base manager the next morning whose response was "ok thanks". Mine was a built in deadhead tho, I would have probably skippped McD otherwise.

I was commuting home on another airline through ORD when an AA gate agent insisted I gate check my flight case. I refused. In it I had my laptop, noise canceling headsets, I-pad and prescription sunglasses. Nearly three grand in personal and company issued stuff. No way was that going near a baggage handler.
And no way was that gate agent letting me get on that plane with that flight case. I had to catch another flight.
I filed a complaint with our jumpseat coordinator (not 9e) who contacted the AA jumpseat coordinator. I was told this went "right to the top" at AA and would get resolved. I never heard anything more.
If that were to happen again, even going to work, well, then I guess I'm not getting to work...

Several times I have heard "we are out of space, you have to check your bag". I get on the plane, and open the closed bins around my seat. Enough room for at least 5 roll-aboards. Ridiculous.
I also love it when an over-zealous ramper at the door tries to tell me my LW bag won't fit on this plane, it's a CRJ. Had one argue with me as I carried it up the jet bridge, and told me when I brought it back to him because it wouldn't fit, that he would THROW it in the cargo bin. Left him a tad disappointed that day.
