If one has the flexibility to move, it is better to live in base, regardless of which aircraft one is assigned. Particularly since one may be on reserve for the first six months. (Note: time spent on reserve depends on how many new hires get assigned to one's base, so it's possible to spend only a month or two on reserve, IF you are at the junior base and they are doing a lot of hiring.)
The trips on the 900 do not look very different than those on the 200. The average leg length is longer, but not enough to really matter. Once you hold a line, expect four 4-day trips each month, regardless of whether you are on the 200 or 900.
At the moment, JFK/LGA and CVG have 900s only. MSP, DTW, and ATL have both 200s and 900s.

1. Seat locks are temporarily waived if the company opens a new base.
2. The seat lock is waived for a pilot who is displaced during a realignment.

The company tells you what aircraft and base you're going to start at. When the next vacancy hits...could be while you're in training or not til after training then you can bid in an order for what base you want. If you're seniority can hold it then you can switch. Right now on the 200 msp and dtw are junior. On the 900 cvg is...expect nyc to be on that list come summer time.

No, you can only break the seat lock if you are displaced, or if a new base is opened after your date of hire and it only has one aircraft type. Ex: when CVG opened 200 people were allowed to bid to it prior to the end of the seat lock. At this point all new hire openings are 200 spots, FYI. 200 bases are in seniority order MSP, DTW, ATL.

Actually, the latest vacancy notice, posted March 11, shows 58 FO openings as follows.
NYC 900 FO: 25
ATL 900 FO: 20
ATL 200 FO: 6
DTW 200 FO: 5
MSP 200 FO: 2
These openings will be filled first with pilots wishing to transfer from other bases, then with new hires. So I would expect the upcoming new hire classes to be divided between 200 and 900 (mostly 900).

Maybe some ATL 200 slots will be left over after pilots with expired seat locks switch to the 900. I could see CVG FOs trying to bail and leaving slots open there (that's a horrible base for commuters). It's gonna be mostly DTW and MSP 200 slots leftover, though.
As of right now, the only slots available to new hires are on the 200... 13 in DTW and 37 in MSP.
