Considering career change to Envoy
Hi Everyone:
I am 45 and considering getting back into airline flying. Previous 121 experience was with ExpressJet (flown as Continental Express circa 2007). Had a really great experience at XJT right up until the airlines started furloughing.
Envoy would be my #1 choice to return to flying. I live in DFW, wife, 2 kids, etc; so living in base is key for me. Would appreciate your thoughts on a few questions I have:
- What are the chances of getting DFW out of the school house?
- Duration of reserve time at DFW?
- During reserve and assuming DFW based, approx. # days/week, or #days/month would I be gone from home?
- At XJT we had 2Hr & 12 Hr call out windows. What are the call out windows at Envoy?
Having flown 121 previously, I get everything depends on timing, seniority, whims of the industry, planets alignment, etc, etc.... mostly looking to gather some "approx facts" to help with the decision (convincing the wife).
Thanks in advance to all. Safe Flying!!

The one thing you’ve probably picked up on already is the Envoy threads have a small number of loud bitter pilots that respond with the garbage above. I heard the same before I was hired here and my time away from home and treatment by the company has no resemblance of the above response. They used to ***** because the upgrade was 9 years, now it’s as soon as you meet qualification, and they still *****. No pleasing this group. Watch the responses! I, like you, have experience outside the airline world and I’ve never had more time off in my entire career. Rather than tell you how I think it is here is my schedule for November.

Getting DFW out of the gate is hit or miss. Either way, you can be back there within 3 months. Usually less.
Length of reserve is pretty short on the ERJ side. Just a few months, unless you voluntarily bid reserve which many do. I'm not sure how long it is on the 175, but I've heard only a few months as well.
On reserve you'll get 11 days off. Within a month or two as your seniority creeps up you'll be able to stay home and not get called at least a couple times a week. So add those days to your days off. Otherwise you'll be gone the standard amount. 3 or 4 days. If you have to commute you may need to add an additional day away from home in there every now and then. But again..with a little seniority it's less of an issue. A non issue if you live in base.
2 hour call out on reserve. 3 in LGA.
If you have 1,000 hours 121 time you'll upgrade immediately on the next bid as long as you are open to any base and equipment. I believe that upgrading in DFW on the ERJ is fairly quick. Worse case you wait 3 months for the next upgrade bid so that you can hold DFW.
Anyways..that's most of it. Envoy is a great place to be these days. There are some who are never happy and hate life..they typically live on this forum. In real life we are all a fun bunch.

Did the company not just displace DFw pilots to LGA out of seniority because they had 1000 hr 121 time??
I'm not bitter. I just speak the truth. If a pilot doesn't have 121 time then it's a good time to come to Envoy. If you have 1000 hrs of 121 time then the company is going to do to you what it just did to 50 FIFTY!!!!!!! Pilots that had 121 time. And don't call me bitter. I want to be able to tell the guy yes come to Envoy. You will be able to get DFW soon and keep it. How did that just work out for 50 new hires this past year that came in with 121 time????

Calling me bitter..... If you only knew! I have had it better then the fast majority of the pilots here. My QOL and pay has been far above what other pilots have experienced here. I want him and other new hires to have the experience I have had. Sadly it isn't offered to guys with prior 121 time. I live in DFW and see my wife and kids at least 330 days out of the year.
