Who do you think? Starts with a P, doesn't end in an A...and will soon be operating ERJ-145s for AA. Keep in mind the long term goal: Envoy as the Embraer operator for AA.

Merge one super senior pilot group with another? Don't think so. I see an "asset" transfer. Grow PDT similar to how they grew PSA. Keep moving Envoy aircraft to PDT and have their upgrade time artificially drop. Now you have a bunch of upgrading captains who are going to be at a pay grade lower than captains at Envoy. Keep doing this and route all new-applicants (by their own choice) to PDT. Get Envoy to a manageable size and shut it down, ridding themselves of the gummers.

Interesting analysis, and one that I agree with. Only thing I'm not 100% sold on is a merger. I assume you mean Envoy merging with Piedmont. But that would reduce the company's ability to whipsaw.
But I agree that there is a long term plan for Envoy which involves us being the E-175 operator. In fact, AA said as much in their last meeting with Envoy. But first there is a size they need to get us down to. Ask yourself why would AAG spend the money to start up a 145 program at a wholly owned when they could keep them at envoy or farm them out to a current operator? Is it that they need to provide those aircraft in order to kick in the concessions at PDT so that the envoy and PDT contracts would be similar enough that an arbitrated JCBA would retain the 12/4 caps and other provisions? The fear and attrition this announcement caused at envoy and the influx of new hires at PDT it caused is just icing on the cake if the goal is to merge the groups. |
Envoy Air will shrink by half in next 18 months, union says | The Star Telegram The Star Telegram
If this is true that means only 230 Captain slots will ever be open at any given time in the next few years with 300 lifer captains never leaving until retirement. |

It would reduce the ability to whipsaw but PDT would not be an effective whipsaw candidate anyhow as they are not going to be flying equipment comparably sized to envoy and PSA.

Only question for me is if a merge with PDT is AA's plan A or plan B. Either way it would be silly no to realize that a merge is a distinct possibility.
