UA tried to buy AirW almost 20 yrs ago and lost in arbitration, the new AFA scope clause is even stronger...(my girlfriend is UA f/A and afa rep)
AFA FILES SUIT AGAINST UNITED AIRLINES
WASHINGTON, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Association of Flight
Attendants, AFL-CIO, filed suit last week against United Airlines, alleging a contract violation in connection with the recent Air Wisconsin acquisition. "Under the scope clause of our contract with United, all flying must be done by flight attendants on the United seniority list," explained A. Diane Tucker, president of AFA's Master Executive Council at United. "This situation should go to arbitration, allowing us to properly enforce our contract."
According to Tucker, the company has denied arbitration in this matter and refused to abide by the scope clause of the contract. A company reply to the AFA suit is due next month.
The largest flight attendant union in the world, the Association of Flight Attendants, AFL-CIO, represents more than 32,000 flight attendants at 20 different carriers, including both United Airlines and Air Wisconsin.

United didn't just TRY to buy Air Wisconsin, they DID buy them. Lock, stock and barrel. The company they bought, and as far as I know still own, was called Air Wisconsin Airlines Inc. The purchase came either Dec.1991 or Jan. 1992.
This gave UAL ownership of ZW's ORD slots. After gaining uncontested control of those slots, they had no need for the high cost airline and immediately set about liquidating them.
The Dash 8s were spun off to Atlantic Coast. (bringing about that airline becoming a 121 carrier)
The BAe-ATP's were spun off to a newly created airline operated by ol Hulas called United Feeder Service. This airline operated until the ATP leases were up then it was shutdown.
The few remaining F-27's were parked. No idea what became of them.
The BAe-146's were spun off to a newly created airline called Air Wisconsin Airline Corporation. It still operates today.
AWAC took about 1/3 of the pilot senority list, in senority order.
The other 2/3 pilots were out. I presume similar percentages in other areas of the operation.
I can't prove it, but always felt that the FA contract thing was for show. Herr Wolf did not want to pay commuter pilots 50% more than the going rate. What he wanted, and got, were the ORD slots, and the same flying done for much less.

Not to mention lower insurance cost sharing, better 401k matching, higher vacation and sick accrual, higher CBT pay.
Plus other perks like better LTD, OJI bank, no reassignment windows, no ACARS reassignments, no check-in requirement, better overall reserve rules.
Probably a wash, if not ahead when considering those other QOL items.
