Here’s my advice as a LCP. Be familiar with the FOM, nothing in it needs to be memorized. It’s source material, be able to find the information if asked.

For an oral? Sure. Real world you probably should have a few things memorized such as what I mentioned above. But that’s very little of it.

Nothing in the oral from the FOM, nothing should be memorized from the FOM. Just be able to locate the subject matter in a timely fashion. A lot has changed since you/I went through BI

And much stays the same. ExpressJet, at least a year ago, had crews depart without a required alternate and thus less than the required fuel. In addition to the personal hazard doing so presents it also can present a professional hazard. Nothing like explaining a violation during an interview.

The advice I gave applies to any commercial operation, not ExpressJet specifically. There are some things you will use in day to day operations and should probably memorize. “1,2,3 rule” “1 approach 2 approach rule” come to mind. One will (or should be), looking at that every leg.

Yes, it is simple to know. That’s my point. One should not assume nothing in an FOM needs to be memorized. That’s bad advice. In any commercial operation. But maybe it’s the advice those crews were given. “Don’t bother memorizing anything in the FOM.” Oops.
