There has been a gradual and continuous degradation in the quality of lines and pairings over recent months and years. Much of this has to do with the reduction in the "quality" of flying we are awarded by United. In addition, management has made deliberate decisions recently that have dramatically reduced the quality of our lines. For example, they recently forced the XJT Scheduling Committee to produce as few lines as possible for August, which resulted in fewer days off for lineholders (IAH saw just seven lines above minimum days off in August). As our contract requires lines to be built to "maximize days off," a group grievance was filed over this.

Don’t you guys use PBS? I thought PBS allowed you to sort of “build your own line?” Please correct me if that’s not how it works.

It’s important for new hires to know what they are getting into.

No PBS, line bidding. PBS software only for the second phase after vacations/training are put on your line. PBS is only as good as the contractual work rules (or lack of) that get programmed into the system.

There is no perfect regional the sooner you understand that the quicker you will be going somewhere that actually pays you enough to complain.

Take everything with a grain of salt. Im a new hire did reserve for a month and a half now a lineholder in my base and i have 15 days off. Theres a lot to complain about but on reserve i flew a bunch never had a rolled day. If i keep moving up the seniority at a similar rate ill upgrade near 18months assuming hiring continues at the same rate. I started 1450 now im near 1150.

Like i say theres plenty of stuff to complain about but its worked out well for me. The truth is somewhere between the doom and gloom from the union and the sunshine and rainbows from the company.
