Quote: So, your parents/brother/sister live in the base but you don't?
Yes. Northern Virginia is expensive as sh*t. I grew up in that area and do not wish to move back. South Atlanta suburbia is my preferred location if I could hold a line.

Truth be told I wish my parents lived in base. I have a brother in Manhattan but in most circumstances it's not a useful place to crash, due to time and space limitations.
Quote: I can see why everyone is jumping on the 'only dumbasses commute' bus, but you don't always know someone's situation.

For instance, I have a free crashpad with free transportation and free food/beer when I get there if it is ever needed when I can't commute out the same day. I can also pick up trips from the base that I actually live in now that I will be a line holder. I will increase my pay significantly. Unlike most people I actually enjoy my job. I know, *** and I doing on here speaking such sadistic ideas.

75hrs + 200hrs perdiem = $3040
95hrs + 450hrs perdiem = $4170

So really, will I commute to pay my mortgage plus some? Yes.
LOL, give it time my friend. Give it time. And the whole part about being able to pick up trips and swap others when you hold a line. Surprise!!!! You'll see.

Well I know you can only straight pickup out of base, and I've always known that trading trips was a PITA. More to know eh?

You on the CRJ side of EV? Did you ever hear about the LGA lines we had in July? I only heard something about them, but never looked into it as that was on the 700/900 not the 200.
Quote: A favorite story from ASA.

My commuting FO enters the flight deck, sweaty, out of breath and disheveled. Says his commute was a nightmare. I reply "this job isn't worth commuting for." He deadpans, "if it isn't worth commuting for, it sure isn't worth moving for."

He was correct.

Done it, did it, have the T-Shirt. Would not want to have to again. Someday it will be worth it though.
Your last sentence is what this regional job is all about. For most of us this is just a stepping stone. You do what you have to do to get the time, upgrade, whatever to move on. That's why I commute.

And yes, everyone's situation is different. Which is why many chose to commute. They, for their own personal reasons, don't live in base. But they have a goal and it's to do what it takes to move on to bigger and better.

Some day it will all be worth it!
To throw some gas on the fire- riddle me this:

What if there is never another upgrade in ATL for EV. Incomprehensible, I know, but who would have thought it about OH in CVG either. 717's moving in, the fleet gets strewn around the country, 200s retired 2:1, etc, etc, etc. Is it really that far fetched? Wonder if the DFW folks ever thought it would go down like it did a year or two prior??

I thought long and hard about taking DTW, in the end I decided life was too short for that mess. Full of suck and I may regret it, but I am not gonna pimp myself that hard.

I feel that many at ASA will never upgrade unless they pass up opportunities to move on. I'm at 5 years and know that I will never upgrade at ASA. At 5 years I can barely hold a line in the right seat, there are 400 numbers senior to be to upgrade first. That's going to take a long long long long time with the amount of 50 seaters that we have in the Delta system, unless mgmt finds flying for them with other carriers. I made peace with that a few years ago and know I won't upgrade here because I'll move on first. Even if I'm a "majority" citizen I think most will be able to move on somewhere before an upgrade comes around here, around my seniority at least.

If your on the LASA side have patience.
150 away on the L-XJT side and about to pass year 6. All upgrades have stopped, I'm starting to have the same feeling.
