I'd rather see organized "farm league" programs like this than a random free-for-all of pilots doing anything possible to churn out hours and get hired by the majors. It seems that a tracking program that has a light at the end of the tunnel will do more to attract quality people into the industry than no program at all.

The Cape Air internship at my college preys on students who go into excessive debt all to get an SIC position in a 402. One of the requirements is the schools Charter program which costs roughly $6398 to sit in a 340/421 and fly school officials around for a semester. (Your basically fronting the cost to move these people around when you should be the one being paid, but that's a whole another argument.) If you're lucky you get 20 or so hours. To even take the charter course you also need to do your multi at the school which also runs somewhere between $6840. Were talking about students tacking on nearly $20k in debt just to qualify for a program like this. All it's going to attract is people willing to take out massive loans at a so called chance to get to Jetblue.

PPL license at that school is now up to $12200. Just the PPL and I'm sure places like UND Purdue and Embry are even more. Were not going to see more quality applicant's with this, just more ignorant kids broke as they graduate and are stuck paying back high interest loans. Sorry if I sound heated I just hate seeing people go into debt over this career without knowing all the possible options out there.

The reality I think is that there aren't any or enough mentors around to guide the students at a high school level to let them know about the truth of this industry.

Cape Air Captains make more money than XJT FO's. Cape Air pays per duty hour, not flight hour like most airlines. They're also home every night.

I gladly mentor ppl wide eyed to this industry. It's not to turn them away but explain the reality of this job. I'm afraid ppl seeing this gateway program will enter it for all the wrong reasons and go into massive debt at a long shot chance in getting a job at JetBlue.

If you paid $12200 for a private ticket, you're either a terrible pilot or being ripped off. No need to pay that, when you can do it for just over 1/2 that.

I did not but that is the current cost for that course. There is still a decent amount of people paying for ratings at 141 schools too. What they fail to realize is 6 months after they graduate the loan repayments start and they're going to be effed big time trying to pack back a minimum of 100k in debt. Good luck doing that on your own with Cape/Xjet pay.

Is that true when you take into account retirement, health insurance, etc? What does a Cape Air Captain's W2 look like? Serious question.

I made $47k my first year at Cape, flying about 700 hours. Pay is by the duty hour, not flight hour. Solid gig. Can't comment on post-contract rates or working conditions, though.
