Why would FedEx care? I genuinely don't understand. Just trying to figure all this out

Apparently my idea is frowned upon at FedEx so I will just go with the crash pad route and stay living in Denver as to not break any FedEx policies . Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Maybe they won't. The HK cases involved tax equalization and the loss of the foreign earned income exclusion to the company.

But the company is reporting your income to the IRS, and I suppose your address is in that data. They could claim that you lying to them could in turn cause them to lie to the IRS.

I know your taxes ain't my business. But I never lie to Fedex. Ever. They get real vindictive sometimes.

Default If it Legal with the Government???

If you meet the requirements for two residences with the IRS, how can the company have any legal ground against you?

I like many folks, have two homes. One is my stated residence, where I'm on file with FedEx. I split my time between both places. Now neither of those places is in TN, and the company doesn't care. Are some of you saying that if a new hire has a home in TN and another state, he is going to get fired??

When I was a new hire almost 15 years ago, all I heard was, "you're going to get fired".

To the new hires out there:

If something is legal, feel free to do it. Follow the rules set up by the company. Read them carefully and follow them.

If you want to talk to crew members with an item of footwear on you're hand, do it. It's been proven you won't get fired. And No, I'm not talking about the person everyone is thinking of, I'm talking about someone else.

If you want to have the worse CRM skills imaginable, and after retirement get into a fight and arrested, do it. You should have a 30+ year career of being a donkey's rear.

The fact is, if it's legal and you follow the company rules...you wont get fired. In many cases if it is outlandish and follow some of the company rules...you still won't get fired.

A word of advice. If your going to go off the reservation, go BIG! I mean really BIG

The bigger it is, you will either be employed forever, or be remembered as a "legend"

This is not really much of a federal tax issue, in fact more money for the Feds if we all claim TN or TX residence. But Fred does have to do business with all 50 state governments and some of those states need your tax dollars to support the rioters at Berkely and are very particular about collecting it.

I'm saying that if the company asks you where your primary residence is, tell the truth.

For sure! Worked really hard to get here. I don't exectly have a copy of the policy manual yet so I didn't realize I hit a nerve and apparently a lot of history on this subject!

Yes and no. There's some mixing of apples and oranges (maybe some tangerines) going on. The HKG thing is only remotely related because it involved the actual vs stated location pilots were living. Pilots were fired because the company perceived them to be lying about where they lived and receiving the FDA housing $ as a result (in no way am I taking sides on that - just a broad brush explanation). Past history here has shown, there is little to no wiggle room when it comes to lying to the company, big or small.

If you want to buy a condo/apartment in MEM to make your commute easier, do it. If you want to claim TN as your new home, do it. Just follow the rules and do it legally. I own property in two states. One is my residence and one is an investment property. Fedex has no say (and doesn't care) which one I claim as my residence and which one is my second home or investment.

The company doesn't want to be a third party to some guy's tax avoidance scam, but they aren't trying to be the residence police for state X or the IRS. They ask us to report our residence to ensure they are complying with the appropriate state regarding tax withholding, etc. If we run afoul of state X and Y trying to run a scam, Fedex won't care unless they somehow get caught in the frag pattern. What they will care about is if the person in question made false statements to them in order to run that scam.

Go to the Tennessee Secretary of State's website and look at the requirements to be a legal resident of the state. Problem solved!!

It would be nice if that were true.
