You live in MEM? No brainer...have fun at FDX. More time with family is reason enough to make the jump...solid company, great contract are just added bonuses.
I too was set to retire very high at AAL with the magic 8-ball showing me in the top 100 the last decade and retiring in the single digits. That's great and all, but I was commuting and likely would have the rest of my life, and who really knows what the future has in store. It was a tough decision to leave but I couldn't be happier having jumped to DAL. I can't even begin to tell you how awesome my QOL is now that I can sit short call from my couch. Living in base also opens up lots of opportunities wrt to extra pay (over time, upgrading, sim gig, etc...) with very little extra effort. Hard to pass that up.

Someone posted about this recently who lived in an AA hub and my advice was that it would be hard to turn down living in base. I would say the same thing to you quite honestly. If you live in MEM and you see yourself living in MEM for the next 25+ years then I would 100% come to FDX. Living in MEM at Purple allows a lifestyle that’s probably in practice a 10-15% seniority bump. I know it seems hard to walk away but unless you plan to move to a fortress hub (DFW being the only true fortress hub at AA) I would make the jump to purple. It’s the guys who live in MEM and bid RB who have the sweetest gig of all. Very little night flying, lots of free days off at home and a 20 minute drive to the O&B lot. Instructor jobs are very lucrative if you live in town, kind of harder for commuters, project pilot types, etc. America may run on Dunkin but Purple runs on MEM locals.
Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck.

To the OP... I left a big 3 pax airline that I was supposed to retire top 20 at to come here. No place is perfect but this place works best for me. And I commute. Any job is the best job, or the worst job. It's all about perspective, attitude and what you make of it. I simply cannot imagine passing up FedEx if you live in Memphis. The local crowd gets to enjoy some wild advantages that us commuters may only ever dream of. Plus the opportunities to do some other cool stuff outside of being a line slug.
It seems like your heart is in it, but your brain is telling you to slow down and think about it-- which is good. That being said, I suspect if you never did it, you'll always wonder "what if." JMHO.

Ok....out on a limb with a saw....here I go :
Spent 30 years at FedEx, commuted the last 22.
retired, got bored, flew 5 more years at Delta...in domicile...
FedEx is the Best airline pilot job in the industry...bar none...
The end,
Bill

Those talking about coming to FedEx if you’re going to live in domicile as a benefit miss so much of a huge draw to FedEx.
It’s THE most commutable company ever and with so many commercial DHs, you can often commute while getting paid. Or better yet, get paid to DH to or from the city that you already live in!
Couple that with the ability to use bank money to travel on your own time, getting paid full day rates for 36, 48, and 60 hour layovers, and vast amounts of other benefits........FedEx is often very underrated even when many consider it to be the top landing spot already.

All kidding aside. International will land you some good long layovers, every once in a while, but in all likelyhood you will have to pay in spades with some sh##ty short ones to get that. Domestically, some + 24 hour layovers if coupled to a weekend away from home.
We have some good deals, our travel for purposes of getting to and from work are good, but they should be, it work related. Personal travel benefits.., not so much. Can you mix some work and play into getting Fedex to pay? Maybe, depends on your personal situation, the trip and what DH's it has and were they are on the trip and oh course, whether your significant other is willing to play along with the fact you could get disrupted and the whole plan goes to sh##. We have no meaningful travel benefit by legacy standards, and as best as I can tell, ZERO benefit after retirement.
But unmentioned as a major benefit, in your totally career at Fedex, if you desire, you can do all your flying with no less than half your takeoffs or lands at night, and possibly more. Also all the free coffee you can drink at our in house coffee cafe in Memphis.

If that, and living in Memphis is a plus, come aboard, look forward to seeing you on the Mad Dog.
