I’m currently a FedEx employee and I’m hoping to get some advice about pursuing a line pilot job. I currently serve with the Air National Guard as a traditional guard pilot with a little over 1100 hours total seat time, of which, about 1000 hours is turbine. My FedEx role is working as a SME pilot for the Flight Simulator Engineering group. I delve into a somewhat technical role and provide a pilot perspective to the engineers for various projects. I’ve been with the company about 4 years. I went through two of Fedex’s in house training programs and gained a type rating in the MD11 and 777, although I don’t have a single flight hour in either type. I just have a few hundred simulator hours in them. Getting flight time in the Guard seems to be slow going and, of course, simulator hours do nothing toward furthering my career. I’m trying to decide what I should do to best meet the requirements and gain consideration to become a “real” pilot at FedEx. I would love to get some advice. I’ve actually been debating regionals, but I really don’t want to abandon a great company after all they’ve done for me.
